Según la “Declaración de las necesidades básicas de las personas sordociegas” (Estocolmo, 1989) el 27 de Junio se declaró día internacional de la sordoceguera como homenaje al natalicio de Hellen Keller –quien representa un modelo de persona sordociega exitosa– con el objeto de divulgar en todos los medios de comunicación a nivel mundial la existencia de la sordoceguera.
